The Jointer Story

More than 50 years ago, while I was serving as a mission worker in Zaire, Africa, I told my family of the problems we were having making doors and windows for Habitat for Humanity.
My two little brothers, Dean and Daryl Long decided to raise money for a woodworking machine called a jointer. They organized a bike ride to raise money and sold garden produce including pumpkins to help purchase this jointer. And it wasn’t just any old jointer, because it was going to a very remote village in Africa, there would be no electricity available. So we purchased a specially modified gasoline-powered jointer from an Amish businessman in Ohio. After a long wait to ship it to Zaire (now Congo) it then had to travel by boat up the Congo River to Mbandaka and then by truck on wet swampy roads to the village of Tondo

Building Hope: A New Hospital for Tondo
The existing hospital, built in 1928 is no long able to serve the community safely. Our goal is to construct a modern hospital that will provide quality healthcare while reducing preventable diseases throug access to clean water.
The first milestone is drilling a safe drining water well that will serve patients, staff and nearby families.
